The door does not open up to the condo, unfortunately. Because Wilford has not been to the condo since the last time he brought someone through the door. It opens up from his office, into an area nebulously defined as a dining room.

At least, there is a table there, which someone has taken a passing effort to keep clear. The stack of mail, hastily picked up toys, and a couple of coats on the table suggest nobody does any eating at the table.

The house is what passes as small in the neighbourhood. Windows look out on the sloping hills and sprawling city in the distance. Inside, brushed steel kitchen, slate grey walls, and leather furniture are betrayed by tiny hand smudges on the windows, peanut butter stains in the carpet, crayon scribbles in places that nobody seems to have the energy to deal with.

The house is also unusually quiet. How interesting.

"I'm going to throw up. Pull over now."

Hey, it was your idea to transport a pregnant woman, Wilford.

"Don't!"

Tess didn't mention puking would be a thing. Wilford slams on the hazards and leans away, hoping Tess opens the door in time.

She's pregnant, of course puking is a thing. The driving didn't help much.

She flings open the door as soon as they've stopped and stumbles out before letting loose on the ground. It lasts a few minutes, then she coughs some and wipes at her eyes. Once she's sure she's done, she climbs back in the car.

"Thank you."

Nobody told him that!

"The fuck was that?" he asks once she's back in the car.

Besides gross.

"Morning sickness."

She looks at him like it should be obvious.

"Which is a god damned lie because it happens whenever it wants to."

"I think that goes under the important information category, don't you?"

He doesn't start up again, just in case.

"Why?"

Everyone knows this.

"It's just a fact of being pregnant."

"You didn't tell me you were sick."

Does Wilford look like a pregnant woman? He has had no reason in his life to know this stuff.

She sighs and rolls her eyes.

"I"m not sick, I'm pregnant. Which, for the first trimester, includes throwing up at random intervals."

She motions him to go.

"I should be fine for a while now."

"Uh-huh. Don't puke in the car. It's not mine."

At least his car is used to being puked in at this point.

Still unsure about this, he turns off the hazards and gets going again, taking things a little more slowly than before. It's not as fun, but neither is projectile vomit.

"That's why I asked you to pull over."

Throwing up in a car you have to continue to drive in is not ideal.

She does feel better, though, and relaxes a little more as they go along.

Wilford feels less okay about this, for some reason. Maybe taking a pregnant woman, in his girlfriend's car, to a secret condo only five people in the world know he owns, is a bad idea!

"Well, we'll get out of the hills as quick as we can then."

Why is this a thing people willingly do to themselves? He does not understand.

Everything about this screams bad idea, but here they are.

"That will probably help."

Don't mind if she dozes off, too. It's another pregnancy thing.

Wilford does not understand. He will never understand. He does not particularly want to understand.

So he just drives, out of the hills and into the city. Once in Richman, the streets try to straighten out, but really all that happens is stop and start traffic gets added to the twists and turns. This is an area of high-rise condos, fancy hotels with Michelin Star chefs, and obscene mansions.


Wilford hates everything about it.

Tess has done her research so while she may not completely understand, she at least has some idea what to expect.

She mumbles a few times before she wakes up with a start. The wind kicks up a notch.

“Where are we?”

Goddamn wind.

"Richman," Wilford says. "Almost there."

He turns a corner, and leans on his horn at a wrong way driver. The other driver bounces up onto the curb to get out of the way.

"Jesus!"

She's fully awake now, holding on again for dear life.

"I knew I shouldn't have come back here."

"You're fine," Wilford says. He's a fairly skilled driver.

He has to be to get anywhere in this kind of traffic.

Another couple of turns and they'll be there.

Another couple of turns and she might just vomit again. At least it'll be on the sidewalk.

"You're going to get us both killed."

"You're over reacting. I know how to drive."

At least they're very short turns. First onto the correct street, and then into the parking garage for one of the high-rise buildings. He finds his parking spot right where it always is, and takes a moment to fish a parking pass from his wallet. With the bright blue card on the dash, he's quick to get out of the wind box.

"I am being perfectly reasonable."

Tess is thrilled once they've stopped and at their desired location, even.

You're sure someone here can help?"

"Sure? Not at all."

But not trying just seems stupid. He doesn't want to have to avoid the bar for the next nine months.

He keeps his wallet out as he leads the way to an elevator. Even the parking garage seems more expensive than Wilford's house.

"Well, if they can't do anything I'm sure my scientists at home can figure something out."

It's what she pays them for, after all.

She follows Wilford to the elevator.

"I can pay."

"Damn right, you're paying."

Not for the elevator though. That just needs to be fed an ID card before it accepts his input for the 20th floor. The glass back looks out over the city as they climb the side of the building. Wilford isn't looking out the window, though. He's standing with his arms crossed over his chest, looking at Tess. Studying her.

She leans against one of the walls and sighs. It's another windbox, but hopefully that will be sorted out soon enough. Then she notices Wilford staring at her.

"What?"
